What is Pilates?
Pilates is a system of exercises designed to develop muscle strength while increasing flexibility and joint range of motion. On specialized equipment and in floor exercises the body curls, arches, flexes, extends, twists and glides. Emphasis is placed on strengthening core muscles of the torso that support the spine. Also, Pilates aims to restore joint range of motion and will allow the extremities to move freely and efficiently. Pilates is a conditioning method that corrects faulty movement patterns, teaches proper movement mechanics, supports good health and empowers well-being.

Will Pilates help my sore back?
Often strengthening core muscles and improving hip range of motion is enough to alleviate most back soreness. Of course, this will vary from person to person depending on the severity or acuity of the pain. Pilates focuses on correct alignment and muscular force, which with repetition, can restore balance to the muscles and bones. At this point the spine decompresses, back pain reduces, and neck and shoulder tension alleviates. If you are coping with a spine injury, it is always best to have your doctor’s consent before embarking on any new exercise program or therapy.

Do I need to be in good shape to do Pilates?
The beauty of Pilates is that the method can be tailored to anybody. The exercises and pace of the exercises can be modified to fit your needs, goals and fitness level. It is important to seek good instruction and determine whether or not you are best suited for group lessons or individual instruction or both.

Will I lose weight doing Pilates?
Of course, this depends on many factors such as diet, body type, and other activities in your schedule. Pilates has a lovely way of toning and lengthening your musculature, which often looks and feels as though you are losing weight. The powerful and tight center acquired while practicing Pilates trims your waistline. Most importantly Pilates will restore the energy for your daily activities that extra weight often taxes. You will feel longer, taller and more in control of your body.

How often should I do Pilates?
Joseph Pilates said that one should do Pilates every day even if only for 10 or 15 minutes. This does not mean that you need to have instruction every day, but that you could incorporate a few things you learn from your lessons into your daily schedule. Unfortunately daily Pilates is not realistic for everyone, so we recommend that you participate in at least two Pilates sessions each week. Three sessions weekly is even better. For those of you who can only fit in one session a week on a regular basis will also notice a difference in how you feel.

How do I get started?
The best way to get started is to choose among the many options available at Streamline. Private instruction is a superb way to begin Pilates because your personal instructor’s number one goal is to teach your body Pilates with appropriate modifications at the tempo suitable for your needs and abilities. Mat classes are taught in groups of 5-10 people and are a very affordable way to insert Pilates into your existing exercise program (not recommended for people experiencing pain). Streamline offers an Introductory Package that provides you with three private lessons and two mat classes; this series is designed to introduce you to Pilates and the potential it holds for you. You will come to know the class schedule at Streamline and our staff is available to offer options of private, small group or mat class instruction in response to your needs and goals. We also offer yoga class to compliment your new found mind-body awareness and support the work and knowledge you learn in Pilates. Clearly there are many combinations of sessions and classes you can weave into your weekly routine. The important thing is to make a realistic plan and get started.

Is Pilates like yoga?
Pilates exercises were inspired partly by yoga. Like Pilates, most forms of yoga are a series of postures designed to strengthen, open and balance the body. Both Pilates and yoga incorporate strong, full breathing. Some of the Pilates exercises look familiar to yoga postures, but Pilates is more dynamic. The Pilates Method stimulates the musculoskeletal, central nervous and respiratory systems that help prevent re-injury and reduce chronic pain. Yoga strives to integrate all bodily systems, including the organs, lymph, respiratory, central nervous and musculoskeletal systems.

Does Streamline have a Pilates certification program?
No, we do not have a full certification program, but we do serve as a satellite studio to The Pilates Center in Boulder, Colorado and facilitate the apprenticeship hours needed to gain certification. The student attends the lectures and performs the tests in Boulder but can do the observation, practice teaching, and lesson hours at Streamline in Salt Lake City. Please refer to this certification program at thepilatescenter.com and at Streamline speak with Eva Kauffman about the apprenticeship.

What is Streamline's reservation policy?
We do have a reservation policy because we have limited space and specific staff availability. The policy is as follows:
1. Private and semi-private sessions are by appointment only.
2. For group classes, schedule up to one week in advance.
3. When you attend a class you will be eligible to reserve a place in that class the following week.
4. If when scheduling the class is full, you will be put on a waiting list and notified as space becomes available in the order that waiting list names were taken.
5. If you want to schedule more than one week in advance, we will gladly put you on the waiting list and phone you as space becomes available.
6. We will continue to waitlist you for the desired class until space becomes available and help you explore other class choices in the meantime.

We recommend that if you have limited availability and the class schedule is not compatible to your schedule, you consider private sessions that are better suited to your available time.
